Notes on the Tigers
… LSU has a four-game lead over Arkansas in the SEC Western Division, and the Tigers trail Vanderbilt by one game in the overall league standings … LSU’s 37-4 overall record is the best 41-game mark in Fighting Tiger baseball history, surpassing the 36-5 record compiled by the 1986 club … the Tigers’ 15-3 SEC record is the best 18-game league record in school history, tying the 15-3 mark established by the 1986 squad … LSU’s 16-inning win over Alabama on Saturday matched the longest games in school history – LSU defeated South Alabama, 6-4, in 16 innings on April 10, 1972, and the Tigers dropped a 7-6 decision at Florida in 16 innings on March 22, 1996 … the Tigers have won six straight road series, dating back to last season, and three of those six road series wins have come against Top 10 teams – the Tigers defeated No. 1 South Carolina last season, and LSU posted series victories at No. 8 Mississippi State and at No. 10 Arkansas this season … sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola fired his second consecutive complete game and his first career shutout Friday night when he blanked Alabama, 5-0, in Tuscaloosa … Nola limited the Tide to just three singles while recording one walk and 10 strikeouts … he threw 110 pitches, and after allowing a leadoff single in the sixth inning, he retired the final 12 Alabama batters of the game … the shutout was LSU’s first in an SEC game since Kevin Gausman blanked Tennessee on May 13, 2011 … Nola also became the first LSU pitcher to record back-to-back complete games since Gausman defeated Vanderbilt and South Carolina over the final two weekends of the 2012 regular season … Nola leads the SEC in strikeouts this season with 82, and he improved to 7-0 on the year with a 2.15 ERA … Nola was invited last week to join Team USA for its 33-game international tour this summer … junior right-handers Nate Fury and Kurt McCune pitched brilliantly over the final six innings of the Tigers’ 16-inning win over Alabama on Saturday, combining to limit the Crimson Tide to no runs on three hits (all singles) with no walks and seven strikeouts … Fury worked a career-high four innings, blanking Alabama with a career-best five strikeouts … McCune, who missed the first eight weeks of the season due to a stress fracture in his back, earned the victory by shutting out Alabama over the final two frames, recording two strikeouts and allowing just one single.
