Thompson Leads Men's Golf in Final Round at SEC's

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- LSU sophomore Curtis Thompson cracked the Top 15 of the final leaderboard in his first career start at the SEC Men's Golf Championships after firing a 2-over par 72 in Sunday's final round to lead the 15th-ranked Tigers in the event held this weekend at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.

Thompson followed rounds of 1-under 69 on Friday and 5-over 75 on Saturday with a team-low 2-over 72 on Sunday to finish his first SEC Championships in a tie for 15th place overall at 6-over par 216 for the weekend.

LSU posted a team score of 17-over par 297 in Sunday's finale en route to an 11th-place finish in the final team race at 41-over par 881 for this year's championship.

The No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide overcame a three-shot deficit to No. 30-ranked South Carolina entering the final round to defend their SEC Championship with a winning 54-hole score of 8-over par 848. The Tide posted a score of 10-over par 290 on Sunday to finish two shots ahead of the Gamecocks in the chase for the team championship.

Auburn finished 12 shots off the pace in third place with a 54-hole score of 20-over par 860, while SEC newcomer Texas A&M followed in fourth place at 24-over par 864 and Mississippi State rounded out the top five in fifth place with a final tournament score of 26-over par 866.

LSU junior Andrew Presley followed Thompson in LSU's lineup with a 4-over 74 in Sunday's final round to finish in a tie for 47th place with a score of 14-over par 224 for the championship.

Sophomore Myles Lewis added a 5-over 75 toward LSU's team score to wrap up the tournament in a tie for 63rd place at 19-over 229. Freshman Zach Wright and sophomore Stewart Jolly posted matching scores of 6-over 76 on Sunday as Wright tied for 36th place at 12-over 222 and Jolly tied for 43rd place at 13-over 223.

Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen overcame a four-shot deficit to South Carolina's Caleb Sturgeon entering the day to claim medalist honors at this year's SEC Championships by three shots over his Gamecock rival.

Cappelen fired a 4-under 66 in Sunday's final round while Sturgeon carded a 3-over 73 as Cappelen took home the title with a winning 54-hole score of 8-under par 202. Sturgeon finished runner-up with his final score of 5-under par 205.

Leading Alabama to the team title were three golfers finishing among the Top 10 of the final leaderboard as Cory Whitsett tied for third place at 1-under 209, Trey Mullinax took ninth place at 3-over 213 and Bobby Wyatt tied for 10th place at 4-over 214. Crimson Tide standout Justin Thomas also tied for 12th place at 5-over 215.

The Tigers now await their NCAA Regional seeding as the postseason fields will be announced by the NCAA Selection Committee on Monday, May 6, at 8 p.m. CT. LSU is set to play host to the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional from May 16-18 at the University Club in Baton Rouge. It marks the first time in program history that the Tigers will play host to a regional tournament on its home course.
