BATON ROUGE, La. -- Third baseman Christian Ibarra drove in second baseman JaCoby Jones with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night to give No. 4 LSU (8-1) the 4-3 victory over Brown (0-1).

A nicely executed hit-and-run by designated hitter Tyler Moore with the score tied 3-3 put Jones, who led off the ninth with a walk, in scoring position. The runners advanced on a hard-hit ground ball to first by catcher Chris Chinea leading to Ibarra's game-clinching fly ball.

"I'm just glad we got the win," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, "because it certainly wasn't an artistic success. We had opportunities to break the game open, but we couldn't get the timely base hit with runners on. You have to tip your cap to Brown - they played a great game and gave us all we could handle."

Left-hander Chris Cotton (1-0) was credited with the win after taking the mound in the eighth inning and striking out two in the ninth.

LSU starter Aaron Nola struck out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings of remarkable work while giving up three hits and no earned runs in the no decision.

Brown right-hander Taylor Wright (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up one earned run on one hit and one walk without recording an out.

The Tigers faced a 3-2 deficit in the eighth inning, however, LSU evened the score with a sharply hit single to right field from shortstop Alex Bregman.

LSU fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning after an error from Ibarra down the third base line allowed Brown outfielder Matt DeRenzi to score.

First baseman Mason Katz gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a bases-loaded, two-RBI double to right.

Brown bounced back to take a one-run lead in the eighth inning with an RBI-single from right fielder Will Marcal.

Moore finished the game 3-for-5 for the Tigers, marking his second straight three-hit game.
