BATON ROUGE - LSU's Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes has selected Dean Dick White and Dr. Melinda Solmon for the BASF Professor of Excellence Award.

Dr. Solmon was recognized at the LSU women's basketball game against Alabama on Thursday, and Dean White will be recognized at the men's basketball home finale against Ole Miss on March 9.

"It is with great joy that we, in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes, selected Dr. Richard White and Dr. Melinda Solmon as our 2013 recipients of the BASF Professor of Excellence Award," said Kenneth O. Miles, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes. "They are the quintessential educators. Their advocacy for student success and their scholarly commitment to our students and LSU makes them ideal honorees. We, at LSU, are fortunate to have faculty members of their caliber."

Dr. Solmon is the Roy Paul Daniels Professor and Director of the School of Kinesiology. She is currently the president of the American Alliance for health, physical education, recreation, and dance research consortium.

She was inducted into the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education as an active fellow in 2006 and received the 2011 Honor Award from the Curriculum and Instruction Academy of the National Association for Physical Education and Sport.

Dr. Solmon also has an active record of university service. She was recognized for her contributions in 2011 as the recipient of the H. M. "Hub" Cotton Award for Faculty Excellence, and she has earned her bachelor's and master's degrees as well as her Ph. D. in Kinesiology from LSU.

Dean White is the dean of the E.J. Ourso College of Business and the E.J. Ourso Distinguished Professor of Business.  He is a Pulitzer-nominated political biographer and author of Kingfish, Roosevelt the Reformer, and Will Rogers.

Dean White has published dozens of scholarly articles in prominent journals, and since his arrival at LSU he has taught courses in ethics, public administration theory, human resources management and state and local government.

He received his bachelor's in political science from Old Dominion College, his MBA from Purdue and a PH.D. in public administration from Penn State University and was a research fellow at Harvard University.

"BASF supports higher education as part of our investment in the next generation of leaders," said Tom Yura, Senior Vice President and Manager of the BASF site in Geismar, Louisiana. "We congratulate Dr. Solmon and Dr. White as BASF Professors of Excellence at LSU and salute their commitment to the development of students to help ensure future success."

Dr. James Honeycutt was the first recipient of the BASF Professor of Excellence last fall.

"BASF has gone above and beyond expectations with their commitment to the Professor of Excellence program, and we're fortunate to have them as a corporate partner at LSU," said Ward Wyatt, general manager of LSU Sports Properties. "We're thrilled to honor both Dean White and Dr. Solmon this semester, and we appreciate all BASF has contributed to our programs, student athletes and LSU faculty."
