PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - With sophomore Curtis Thompson carding a team-low 1-over par 73 in Monday's second round, the 12th-ranked LSU men's golf team wrapped up the second day of action at the John Hayt Invitational in a four-way tie for fourth place overall with a 36-hole score of 11-over par 587 in the event being held at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Tigers posted a 9-over 297 on Monday to finish the day in a tie for fourth place with No. 7-ranked Florida, No. 14-ranked Arkansas and North Texas with matching 36-hole scores of 11-over par 587.
The 25th-ranked North Florida Ospreys will tee off in Tuesday's final round with a commanding 12-shot lead in the team race after following a 12-under 276 on Monday with a 5-under 283 on Tuesday for a leading score of 17-under par 559 at the par-72 layout. No. 11-ranked Duke is 12 strokes off the pace in second place at 5-under 571, followed by Central Florida in third place overall at 9-over 585.
Thompson set the pace for the Tigers with a score of 1-over 73 in the second round as he wrapped up the day in a tie for 12th place on the leaderboard at even-par 216 for 36 holes.
Fellow sophomore Stewart Jolly matched Thompson's effort with a 1-over 73 on Monday afternoon after opening the tournament with a score of 6-over 78 on Sunday. Jolly vaulted 20 spots on the board to finish the day in a tie for 50th place overall with his two-round total of 7-over par 151.
Sophomore Myles Lewis carded a 2-over 74 and junior Andrew Presley added a 5-over 77 toward LSU's final team score in Monday's second round to end the round in a tie for 20th place at 2-over par 146 for the championship. Junior Smylie Kaufman will head into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 83rd place at 17-over par 161 for the tournament.
North Florida teammates Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale are locked in a battle for the individual crown after separating themselves from the rest of the field.
After blowing away the field with a bogey-free 8-under par 64 in the opening round, Phelan fired a 5-under par 67 in the second round to wrap up Monday's action with a four-shot lead over Dale with his score of 13-under par 131 in 36 holes. Dale has posted rounds of 4-under 68 and 5-under 67 to move into second place at 9-under 135 for the championship.
The Tigers are paired with Arkansas and North Texas in Tuesday's final round and will tee off on holes Nos. 3-5 with a shotgun start set for 7:30 a.m. CT.
