MOBILE, Ala. - After resuming a suspended second round early Tuesday morning, three Tigers cracked the Top 5 of the final leaderboard to lead the 12th-ranked LSU men's golf team to a strong runner-up finish at the sixth-annual Mobile Bay Intercollegiate held this week at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

The Tigers finished with a flurry as they followed a 1-under par 287 in their suspended second round with a 5-under par 283 in the final round to finish just four shots off the pace with a 54-hole team total of 1-over par 865. LSU's 5-under 283 in the final round tied for the second-lowest team round in two days of action in Mobile.

The 27th-ranked Auburn Tigers were the only team in the field to break par for the week while taking the title by four shots with a winning score of 3-under par 861.

Rounding out the Top 5 of the final team standings was 19th-ranked Illinois in third place at 6-over 870 and 23rd-ranked Wake Forest and 46th-ranked Mississippi State in a tie for fourth place in the 16-team field with matching 54-hole team scores of 11-over 875 for the championship.

Juniors Smylie Kaufman and Andrew Presley and sophomore Stewart Jolly each carded 54-hole tournament scores of 1-over par 217 to finish in a five-way tie for fifth place on the leaderboard.

It marks the second time this season that three Tigers have earned top-five individual finishes in the same event as Jolly joined fellow sophomores Myles Lewis and Curtis Thompson finished in the Top 5 in leading the Tigers to their first team championship of the 2012-13 season at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 24-25 of the fall campaign.

"We had some solid play from the guys after our first nine holes of the tournament," said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. "We were able to finish strong today once we resumed play. It's something we can build on as a team as we move forward in the spring season."

Presley set the pace in the final round while firing a team-low 4-under par 68 to catapult himself 20 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for fifth place at 1-over par 217 for the tournament. Presley had his second top-five finish and third top-10 finish in five starts for the Tigers while already staking his claim on All-SEC and All-America honors this season.

Jolly equaled Presley's performance as he also captured his second top-five and third top-10 finish of the campaign while following a 1-under 71 in the second round with an even-par 72 in the final round for a three-round score of 1-over par 217.

While making just his second start as a member of LSU's five-man lineup during his junior season, Kaufman sandwiched his best score of the week at 1-under 71 in the second round between two rounds of 1-over 73 while tying for fifth place in LSU's spring opener. It also marked his second top-five finish of the campaign.

Lewis finished with rounds of 1-over 73 and 2-over 74 to tie for 22nd place with a 54-hole score of 5-over par 221 for the championship.

After posting a score of 12-over par 84 in Monday's opening round, Thompson bounced back in a big way Tuesday as he finished his last 36 holes of the tournament in 2-under par with scores of even-par 72 in the second round and 2-under 70 in the final round for a total score of 10-over 226. Thompson climbed 35 spots up the leaderboard over the final two rounds and into a tie for 44th place overall.

While LSU took home a second-place finish in the team competition at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, four Tigers also played in the 36-hole South Alabama Individual Tournament held at nearby Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Couse with the course playing to a par-71 for the week.

Junior Landon Lyons was impressive in claiming a one-stroke victory over Auburn's Jake Mondy with a winning score of 1-over par 143 in 36 holes, including a 1-over 72 in the first round and even-par 71 in the second round. Mondy carded rounds of 3-over 74 and 1-under 70 to finish one shot behind Lyons for the individual championship.

Tiger freshman John Jonas finished three shots off the pace set by Lyons and in a tie for third place at 3-over 146 as he posted scores of 1-over 72 and 2-over 74 in the individual event.

Freshman Zach Wright tied for 16th place at 11-over par 153, while fellow freshman Chuck Spears tied for 30th place at 17-over par 159.

There will be no rest for the Tigers as they return to action in just five days with their annual trip to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where they will compete at this year's John Hayt Invitational beginning Sunday at historic Sawgrass Country Club. The University of North Florida is set to play host to the event again this season.
