Softball's Fico Garners All-SEC Preseason Honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LSU senior pitcher Rachele Fico was one of 12 players to pick up All-SEC Preseason-Team accolades Tuesday as selected by the league's coaches. She is the first Tiger to secure this honor since former two-time All-American Kirsten Shortridge in 2010.
Fico, a 2012 NFCA All-America First-Team and USA Softball Top 25 Player of the Year Finalist, is coming off the second 20-win season of her career. The two-time All-SEC Second-Team selection also posted a blistering 1.12 ERA and 13 shutouts last season to rank fourth and fifth in the nation, respectively.
Fico turned in a memorable postseason and was touched up for only two earned runs over her first 28.0 innings during LSU's run to the 2012 Women's College World Series. She claimed NCAA College Station Regional and NCAA Columbia Super Regional MVP honors in four undefeated starts.
In Fico's 13 losses last season, the right-hander received only 10 total runs of support with 12 of those setbacks coming against RPI Top 35 teams. The Connecticut native enters her senior season 35 Ks away from becoming the fifth pitcher in program history to reach 600 career strikeouts.
"There's no doubt that Rachele had a spectacular season and was a big part of our program returning to the Women's College World Series," head coach Beth Torina said. "The great thing about Rachele is that she's always wants to get better and has worked extremely hard during the offseason. She's a fantastic competitor, a great teammate and the type of person that is far less interested in individual awards and more invested in what she can do to help her team win."
LSU is 10 days away from 2013 opening weekend where the Tigers will play host to Hampton, No. 22 North Carolina, Purdue and Tulsa as part of the Tiger Classic from February 8-10.
Season tickets can be purchased for $75 at www.LSUtix.net for a marquee home schedule that features 15 games against 2012 NCAA Tournament participants. The Tigers also will welcome defending national champion Alabama along with Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina for three-game SEC series.
