AUBURN, Ala. - LSU men's tennis sophomore Chris Simpson continued his strong fall play as he won two matches Friday at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center to advance to the singles main draw quarterfinal round at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional.

Ranked 58th nationally, Simpson knocked off Ole Miss' Adrian Skogeng, 6-2, 6-3, in the third round before beating Pedro Dumont of Mississippi State, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16.

The Tigers began doubles play Friday, and both seeded pairs advanced to the third round. Third-seeded Simpson and Stefan Szacinski defeated Troy's Mansingh Athare and Patrick Eichler, 8-6, while No. 8 seed Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh beat Samford's Zac Dunkle and Alex Sajonz, 8-6.

In the consolations singles draw LSU picked up five wins, paced by two victories each for Anderson and redshirt freshman Joe Hill.

Anderson downed South Alabama's Cody Hall in the first round of the consolation bracket, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and followed up by cruising past Tulane's Adam Bernstein, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round.

Hill earned his first career victories as a Tiger in impressive fashion by knocking off Alabama's Brian Conlon, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening round before pulling out a hard-fought win against Tulane's Takuma Ohashi, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6), in the second round.

After receiving a first-round bye in the consolation draw, Trinh breezed past Sajonz in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to earn his spot in the third round.

"Chris Simpson is one of the hardest workers in college tennis, and with the way he competes year-round he deserves to have a lot of success," LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. "The doubles teams that won performed well, and the guys who played in the back draw did a great job to get wins today.

"It's good to have five guys still playing in the tournament in some capacity because we are getting a lot out of this event."

One day after he earned a hard-fought win in his first match in a year, senior Mark Bowtell came up just short in his upset bid of Tulane's ninth-seeded Idan Mark, falling 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5, in the singles main draw third round. No. 18 Olivier Borsos dropped his third-round match to Alabama's Becker O'Shaughnessey as he retired trailing 6-1, 2-0. Boris Arias lost in his third-round match to Tulane's Joe Young, 6-3, 7-5.

Day three of the Southern Regional gets underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT with consolation singles play. Trinh will face Ole Miss' Zack Wilder in his third-round match while Hill and Anderson will square off against each other.

Simpson will play Mississippi State freshman Romain Bogaerts in the singles main draw quarterfinals at 9 a.m., and LSU's two doubles pairs are expected to begin competition in their third-round matches at 1:30 p.m.
