BATON ROUGE - Before the No. 9-ranked Tigers and No. 3-ranked Gamecocks square off in an SEC showdown in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night, the LSU Soccer team makes their trip to Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina in a Friday night tilt set to kick off at 6 p.m. CT.
The Tigers (6-5-4, 2-4-2 SEC) and Gamecocks (4-6-4, 1-4-3) will battle for postseason positioning for the 2012 SEC Women's Soccer Tournament when they face one another on the pitch on Friday night.
Each team enters the weekend following a 1-0 victory in their last Southeastern Conference match as LSU captured a 1-0 double overtime win over the Vanderbilt Commodores in Baton Rouge and South Carolina scored a 1-0 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Columbia on Sunday.
Fans can follow the action through LSU's social media websites as live updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage of the match is available by liking LSU Soccer on Facebook and following @LSUSoccer on Twitter. "It's a great challenge any time you step onto the field to compete in this league. That is certainly the case again as we go back on the road this weekend," said LSU head coach Brian Lee. "The importance of each match is now magnified as we near the end and teams position themselves for postseason play."
Freshman midfielder Haley Emerson came off the bench in the second overtime period to score the game-winning goal for the Tigers in Sunday's victory over the visiting Commodores as she scored her first goal as an LSU Tiger in the 108th minute for the 1-0 decision just over two minutes from full time.
LSU's junior goalkeeper Megan Kinneman continues to display an All-SEC form in leading the defensive effort by the Tigers as she pitched her fifth shutout of the season against the Commodores on Sunday with another fine effort. She has posted a 0.97 goals against average for the fall campaign.
After battling the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday night, the Tigers will head to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on the 23rd-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers in a Sunday afternoon derby scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. CDT at the Regal Soccer Stadium. The Tigers will remain on the road next weekend as they travel to face Ole Miss in Oxford on Friday, Oct. 19, and Missouri in Columbia on Sunday, Oct. 21.
The 2012 regular season is set to come to an end in just two weeks as the Tigers play host to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Thursday, Oct. 25, in a match set to kick off at 7 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Stadium.
