TULSA, Okla. - LSU men's tennis sophomore Chris Simpson lost a tight match to George Washington's Francisco Dias on Wednesday in the final round of qualifying singles at the ITA All-American Championships.
With the winner advancing to the main draw, No. 58 Simpson put up a strong fight before falling to No. 89 Dias 6-4, 7-6 (7) at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
"Chris didn't play as well as he could, but he mentally stayed with it the entire match," assistant coach Danny Bryan said. "He is maturing as a tennis player, and he kept his effort and intensity up throughout the match which will serve him well in the future."
Simpson will return to the courts Thursday for main draw doubles with Boris Arias. Ranked No. 24 in the nation, the duo will take on Virginia's Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond at 4:30 p.m. CT.
Olivier Borsos, ranked 18th nationally in singles, will compete as the No. 16 seed in main draw singles on Thursday, and he will face Georgia's 36th-ranked Hernus Pieters in the first round.
"Olivier has really stepped up and brought intensity in practice, and I'm excited to see him compete," Bryan said. "He is looking forward to the competition, so hopefully he has a good showing."
