Two Tigers Advance at ITA All-American Qualifying
TULSA, Okla. - LSU men's tennis freshmen Tam Trinh and Harrison Kennedy earned spots in the third round of the pre-qualifying singles draw on Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships.
Without playing a point Saturday at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center, Kennedy moved into the third round after receiving a first-round bye and advancing past UNLV's second-seeded Tamas Batyi in a walkover.
Trinh received a first-round bye as well, and in his first match as a Tiger he beat Hawaii's Danilo Casanova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the third round.
"Tam played a very good match, and Tam and Harrison moving forward in the tournament as freshmen is a good sign," head coach Jeff Brown said.
Roger Anderson got the tournament started for the Tigers with the first match of the day in the first round. He fell to New Mexico State's Marc Westgate, 6-4, 6-2.
Stefan Szacinski earned a first-round bye, and he was ousted in the second round by No. 16 seed JT Sundling of TCU, 6-3, 6-2.
Joe Hill also earned a first-round bye, and he lost 6-3, 6-3 to Tyler Brown of UTSA in the second round.
"The team competed very hard today," Brown said. "A couple guys felt a little more pressure than they needed to because they put so much effort in at practice and wanted to come away with wins."
Kennedy and Trinh will play third-round matches and potentially fourth-round matches Sunday, and should they win both, they would advance to the qualifying singles draw that begins play Monday.
Trinh will take on 23rd-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. CT Sunday, and Kennedy will face Alex Palaez of Illinois State at 1 p.m.
Anderson, Szacinski and Hill will compete in consolation matches Sunday. Anderson will play Bradley's Juan Diego-Cuadrao at 9 a.m., while Hill will play North Carolina's Brett Clark at 10 a.m. and Szacinski will face Ace Matias of UNLV at 11 a.m.
