BATON ROUGE - LSU senior tight end Chase Clement has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to the nation's top tight end, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced Tuesday.

A native of Thibodaux, La., Clement is a two-year starter at tight end with nine career catches for 138 yards and one touchdown that came on a one-yard strike from Jarrett Lee last season at West Virginia.

Clement is one of the most experienced offensive players for LSU with appearances in 40 games and nine career starts at tight end to his credit. He has also seen extensive playing time on special teams because of his athleticism and outstanding blocking ability.

Clement is one of seven candidates from the Southeastern Conference on the 33-player watch list, and he is the first Tiger named to the Mackey watch list since Richard Dickson was selected in 2008 and 2009.

The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee, and the winner will be announced live on Dec. 6 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show.

LSU will open the 2012 season against North Texas on Sept. 1 in Tiger Stadium.
