ATHENS, Ga. -- LSU men's tennis senior Neal Skupski advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Georgia's 32nd-ranked Sadio Doumbia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., Thursday.
Skupski, ranked No. 55, joined elite company as he became the sixth Tiger to earn three All-America honors, a list that includes his older brother Ken Skupski who played for the Tigers from 2004-07. Ken was the last LSU player to reach the singles round of 16 in 2007 until Neal accomplished the feat.
The other four are Felix Barrientos (1986-88), Mario Pacheco (1989-92), Tamer El Sawy (1991-93) and Michal Chmela (1997-00).
The victory marked Skupski's fourth-straight win, all of which have come against ranked opponents.
"Neal played very well today, serving really well and controlling the match against a good Georgia player on his home court," head coach Jeff Brown said. "Neal is playing his best tennis since he's been here, and we are proud of him for that. We are looking forward to a great match tomorrow."
Skupski will face top-seeded and defending NCAA Singles Champion Steve Johnson of USC on Friday. Johnson, who is 33-0 this season, has won 68 matches in a row and has not lost a singles bout since 2011.
The time of the match will be announced late Thursday.
