Two Tigers Invited to NCAA Tennis Singles Draw
INDIANAPOLIS --- Senior Neal Skupski and junior Olivier Borsos have been selected along with 62 other players in the nation to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., the NCAA Men's Tennis Subcommittee announced Thursday.
The singles competition will be conducted May 23-28, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). The University of Georgia will serve as host.
All matches will be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Both Borsos and Skupski were chosen as at-large selections. Eric Quigley of Kentucky was the automatic qualifier from the SEC.
Borsos, ranked No. 31 in the nation, holds a 12-10 record on the top court. He has defeated seven ranked opponents this season and is currently riding a five-match win streak.
This will be the first time that the Hungarian native has qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships.
Skupski, a senior from Liverpool, England, is ranked No. 59 and has etched out a 14-8 record this season. Overall, he has racked up 74 individual wins during his collegiate career.
Skupski has attended the NCAA Singles Championships before, making his last appearance in 2010 where he fell to North Carolina's Clay Donato, 7-6(2), 6-3, in the first round.
