BATON ROUGE, La. - LSU sophomore centerfielder JaCoby Jones doubled twice and scored two runs, and junior rightfielder Mason Katz provided two RBI to lead the Gold to a 3-2 win over the Purple in Game 3 of the LSU Baseball Intrasquad World Series Friday at Alex Box Stadium.
Despite Friday's loss, the Purple squad claimed the three-game series with wins on Tuesday and Thursday. The series culminated LSU's six-week fall practice session.
Gold sophomore right-hander Kurt McCune was the winning pitcher Friday in the six-inning game, as he allowed one run in three innings with three strikeouts. Right-handed relievers Joey Bourgeois and Nick Goody limited the Purple to one run over the final three innings.
Purple starting pitcher Joe Broussard gave up two runs in three innings with one strikeout.
LSU coach Paul Mainieri said the Tigers made great strides during the fall in preparing for the 2012 season.
"We learned this fall that we have the chance to be a dominant team on the mound," Mainieri said. "We have a very deep and talented staff; we just need to decide upon the roles our pitchers will have coming out of the bullpen. We play outstanding defense and our catching behind the plate has really improved. Our hitters are very tough outs, and with our pitching and defense, we feel like we can be an excellent ball club."
Mainieri said the Tigers displayed a tremendous work ethic and attitude throughout the fall workouts and scrimmages.
"We had a very intense fall practice period this year, and that's what we expected coming off the disappointment of not being selected last year for the NCAA tournament," he explained. "Our players entered the fall with a renewed hunger for success, and that was demonstrated in the way they worked every day. I think we're a confident, more experienced team, and we're very anxious to get started in the spring."
LSU opens the 2012 season on Friday, February 17 when the Tigers play host to Air Force in Alex Box Stadium.
