BATON ROUGE - The 24th-ranked LSU gymnastics team saw its 10-meet home win streak snapped Friday in the 2011 home opener at the hands of the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators, 196.425-194.000, in front of a great crowd of 3,590 fans in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
LSU fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 against Southeastern Conference competition, but the Tigers saw improvement on vault with a season-high event score of 49.125.
"We just have to stay in the process," coach D-D Breaux said. "I have been the most intense person in the gym, and I have been a real demander of excellence. Tonight on bars we saw extra swings and uncharacteristic things that shouldn't be happening. We just have to get in the gym and work harder."
Individually, freshman Sarie Morrison scored a season-best 39.100 all-around total, and LSU saw three season highs on vault as Morrison earned a 9.875, freshman Sarah Zoldos posted a 9.80 and junior Ashley Lee tallied a 9.875. Sophomore Janelle Garcia earned a career high on beam with a 9.725, and redshirt freshmen Kaleigh Dickson and Zoldos posted season bests with identical 9.725. Sophomore Shelby Prunty tied her career high on floor with a 9.725, and Morrison scored a season-best 9.725 on beam.
The Tigers led Florida (3-0, 2-0 SEC) after one rotation, 49.125-48.975. LSU was led by Lee and Morrison who scored 9.875's. Freshman Maliah Mathis tied her season high with a 9.825, and Zoldos earned a career-high 9.80. Dickson posted a 9.75, and sophomore Ericka Garcia's 9.70 was dropped.
Florida jumped ahead for good in the second event with a 49.300 on vault to LSU's 48.100 on bars. Even though the Tigers struggled as a team in the event, Morrison tied for the title with a 9.80 as the anchor of the event. Ericka Garcia scored a 9.70 to lead off bars, and LSU also counted senior Samantha Engle's 9.725, Dickson's 9.475 and Zoldos' 9.40.
In the third rotation LSU posted a 48.375 on beam, led by Morrison and Janelle Garcia who earned 9.725's. Prunty added a 9.70, Mathis tallied a 9.675 and Dickson scored a 9.550.
In the final rotation the Tigers earned a 48.400, a half-tenth better than the 48.350 in event a week ago at Auburn. A trio of 9.725's by Zoldos, Prunty and Dickson led LSU, and a 9.70 from Morrison and 9.525 by Mathis rounded out LSU's counting scores.
After the slow start on bars, Florida rebounded with a 49.300 on vault, 48.950 on beam and 49.200 on floor to close out the meet.
LSU will head back on the road next week as the Tigers take part in the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. LSU will face Alabama, Missouri and Nebraska at 7 p.m. in the Forth Worth Convention Center on Jan. 29.
