BATON ROUGE -- LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri spoke with great enthusiasm Tuesday as he discussed a 2011 squad that features a class of 18 newcomers.

"This is a very significant day for us, and I'm really proud and happy to announce our incoming class," said Mainieri, who guided LSU to the 2009 College World Series title. "The 2011 season will mark a transition to a new era in our program. We only have two players remaining from our original signing class that arrived in the fall of 2007 -- pitchers Ben Alsup and Daniel Bradshaw. That class was rated No. 1 in the country and was instrumental in us winning the national championship in 2009.

"Hopefully, this new class will have the same significant impact on our program that the original class had. I think there is a really good chance for that to happen."

The 18 newcomers start classes at LSU Monday and will join the returning players for conditioning drills and individual workouts over the next several weeks.

The Tigers begin their full-squad fall practice session on September 26, and fall workouts continue through November 5. The 2011 season starts on February 18 when the Tigers play host to Wake Forest  in Alex Box Stadium.

The new group of Tigers includes nine pitchers and nine position players. Six members of the class were selected in the 2010 MLB Draft.

"It's a phenomenal class," Mainieri said, "and all the credit in the world goes to (LSU associate head coach) David Grewe, who coordinated the class and worked endless hours. He did everything that was necessary to evaluate the players and bring them into our program. David was capably assisted by (LSU assistant coach) Javi Sanchez, who did a tremendous job and has become a veteran recruiter with David's guidance.

"This is a very exciting time for us, and we're looking forward with great optimism to this season."

The six LSU newcomers selected in the 2010 MLB Draft:
RHP Kevin Gausman (sixth round, Dodgers)
RHP Ryan Eades (19th round, Rockies)
INF JaCoby Jones (19th round, Astros)
RHP Tyler Jones (21st round, White Sox)
LHP Mitchell Hopkins (42nd round, Reds)
C Tyler Ross (46th round, Phillies)

The class also features:

Mississippi Player of the Year (JaCoby Jones)
Illinois Player of the Year (Kevin Koziol)
