BATON ROUGE, La. - Five LSU players that played vital roles in the Tigers' return to national prominence have been selected through the first two days of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

Thirty rounds of the 50-round draft have been completed. The final day of the draft begins at 11 a.m. CT Wednesday with Rounds 31-50.

LSU senior Blake Dean and juniors Anthony Ranaudo, Micah Gibbs, Leon Landry and Austin Ross have been chosen by major league organizations, all within the first eight rounds. All five players have significantly improved their status as professional prospects during their LSU careers as they have helped lead the Tigers to the 2009 national championship, two College World Series appearances, one SEC regular-season title and three SEC Tournament crowns.

"Each of these young men has played an instrumental role in the success of LSU baseball," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, "and we are extremely proud of everything they have accomplished in their careers. Blake Dean has been with us for four years and is one of the greatest hitters in LSU history, and the juniors were part of our first recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the country. They have made a tremendous impact upon our program as outstanding student-athletes."

Dean, a first baseman from Crestview, Fla., was chosen in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Undrafted out of high school and selected in the 10th round by the Minnesota Twins in 2009, Dean returned to LSU for his senior season and batted .341 with 15 doubles, 12 homers and 70 RBI. The 2008 first-team All-American finished his collegiate career ranked No. 2 in LSU annals in hits (332), total bases (575) and RBI (260), No. 3 in doubles (63), No. 4 in home runs (56) and No. 5 in runs scored (223).

Ranaudo, a right-handed pitcher from Jackson, N.J. was chosen in Compensatory Round A in between the first and second rounds by the Boston Red Sox. Ranaudo, who was drafted in the 11th round by the Texas Rangers out of high school, has an 18-6 career record at LSU and he earned 2009 All-America honors in helping lead the Tigers to the national championship. He recorded 159 strikeouts in 2009 and was the winning pitcher in the College World Series championship game versus Texas.

Gibbs, a catcher from Pflugerville, Texas, was selected in the third round by the Chicago Cubs. Gibbs, who was not drafted out of high school, was the Tigers' leading hitter this season, batting .388 with 14 doubles, three triples, 10 homers and 60 RBI. The 2010 first-team All-SEC selection was a member of the ABCA Gold Glove Team last season.

Landry, an outfielder from Baton Rouge, was taken in the third round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Drafted in the 37th round by the Cincinnati Reds out of Baker High School, Landry hit .338 this season with 12 doubles, six triples, six homers and 45 RBI.

Ross, a right-handed pitcher from Shreveport, La., was selected in the eighth round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Undrafted out of Captain Shreve High School, Ross was LSU's leader this season in starts (13), innings pitched (88) and strikeouts (98). The petroleum engineering major is a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
