BATON ROUGE - LSU capped the 2009 football season ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll, the organizations announced on Friday.

The Tigers posted a 9-4 mark in 2009 and reached a bowl game for a record 10th straight season. Three of LSU's four losses came to teams ranked in the top 10 in the final polls - No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Florida and No. 8 Penn State.

The only other Southeastern Conference team to join Alabama, Florida and LSU in the top 25 was Ole Miss, who came in at No. 20 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The top 20 final ranking marks the fourth time in five years under Les Miles that the Tigers have completed a season ranked in the final polls. LSU finished in the top five nationally in Miles' first three years, which included a No. 1 ranking and the national title in 2007. LSU was No. 5 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll in 2005 and No. 3 in 2006.

LSU also joins Florida as the only two teams in the SEC to be ranked in the season-ending USA Today Coaches Poll at least four times in the past five years. Florida has done it all five years with LSU doing it four times.

LSU opens its sixth season under Miles on Sept. 4 against North Carolina in the Georgia Dome.
