GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The LSU men’s golf team has been on fire in individual competition this summer, and rising junior Clayton Rotz continued the momentum on Sunday afternoon by capturing the individual title at the 2009 Cardinal Amateur Championship at Cardinal Country Club.

Rotz fired a 2-under par 208 in 54 holes at the par-70 layout to earn a three-shot victory over Drew Yount of Stokesdale, N.C., for this year’s crown in one of the top amateur events in the Southeast.

After firing an impressive round of 6-under par 64 in Friday’s first round, Rotz posted a 1-under par 69 in Saturday’s second round and a 5-over 75 in Sunday’s final round to take the title. The Chambersburg, Pa., native held a comfortable eight-shot lead over Yount heading into the final round.

Rotz was not the only LSU Tiger to finish high atop the leaderboard at this year’s Cardinal Amateur event as senior-to-be Brent Blaum finished in a seven-way tie for third place with a 54-hole score of 4-over 214. Blaum fired rounds of 2-over 72 on Friday, even-par 70 on Saturday and 2-over 72 on Sunday to finish at six shots behind Rotz in the final individual standings.

Not only did Rotz win the Cardinal Amateur Championship, but he is also an alternate to compete in this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship to be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
