BATON ROUGE -- One day after six LSU football players were selected in the NFL Draft, five more Tigers signed free agent contracts with NFL franchises on Monday.
The list of free agent deals for former Tigers include: linebacker Darry Beckwith to the San Diego Chargers, defensive tackle Marlon Favorite to the Carolina Panthers, defensive end Kirston Pittman to the St. Louis Rams, center Brett Helms to the Houston Texans, and defensive end Tremaine Johnson to the Minnesota Vikings.
One other note of interest was confirmed on Monday by the NFL office and that’s Kansas City became the first franchise in the era of the common draft to use three straight first round picks on players from the same school.
The Chiefs selected former LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson with their first round pick – No. 3 overall - on Saturday. The drafting of Jackson marked the third straight year in which the Chiefs picked an LSU player in the first round, joining wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (2007) and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (2008).
The Chiefs roster now features a total of five former LSU players as center Rudy Niswanger and defensive back Travis Daniels are also on the squad in Kansas City.
