EL PASO, Texas -- After opening with rounds of 3-over par 74 and even-par 71 on Monday, LSU junior John Peterson posted a 2-over 73 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in a tie for 23rd place at 5-over 218 for 54 holes at the 35th-annual Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic at El Paso Country Club.
Peterson, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, is the ninth Tiger all-time to compete in the annual championship sponsored by the Sun Bowl Association and the first since former LSU All-American P.J. Smith in 1997.
The field is limited to returning All-Americans from the previous collegiate season, Walker Cup members and the Division II and Division III National Players of the Year. Each school represented is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to benefit the men’s golf program.
Peterson, who earned Second-Team All-America honors from both Golfweek and PING last season, is off to a fast start in his junior season as he wrapped up LSU’s fall campaign with a team-leading 70.8 scoring average and two top-five finishes in four tournament appearances.
Last season, the Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic ranked as the No. 1 tournament for the fifth-straight season at the college level, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Alabama’s Hunter Hamrick and Oklahoma State’s Morgan Hoffman fired matching totals of 11-under par 202 in 54 holes to share the title of tournament champion in the 35th edition of the event. Dustin Garza of Wichita State finished one stroke back with a three-round score of 10-under 203, while Russell Henley of Georgia took fourth place at 9-under 204 and Nick Taylor of Washington placed fifth at 8-under 205.
