Three Pitchers Taken on Day 2 of MLB Draft

BATON ROUGE, La. - Three LSU players were selected Tuesday during Day 2 of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.

LSU players selected on Tuesday include junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Jones (11th round, Minnesota), junior right-handed pitcher Matty Ott (13th round, Boston) and senior right-handed pitcher Ben Alsup (18th round, Colorado).

Rounds 2-30 of the MLB Draft were completed on Tuesday. The draft concludes on Wednesday with Rounds 31-50.

Jones, who transferred to LSU in August from Madison (Wisc.) Area Tech, received National Player of the Week recognition from Collegiate Baseball newspaper after firing a three-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts on May 17 at the University of New Orleans.

Jones, a 21st-round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2010 draft, completed this season with a 4-0 record and a 5.22 ERA in 39.2 innings (14 appearances, six starts), recording 23 walks and 37 strikeouts.

Ott, a product of Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, is LSU's all-time saves leader with 33 in his three-year career. He was 1-3 this season with a 2.60 ERA in 27.2 innings, recording seven walks, 27 strikeouts and six saves.

Ott, who was undrafted out of high school, was named SEC Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-American in 2009, when he was 4-2 with a 2.50 ERA and an LSU single-season record 16 saves.

Alsup, undrafted out of Ruston (La.) High School, posted a 12-6 career mark in four seasons at LSU with a 4.77 ERA in 149 innings. Alsup, who fired an SEC Tournament shutout against Ole Miss in 2010, was 6-5 this season with a 4.66 ERA and one save in 65.2 innings.

Six LSU signees were also selected Tuesday, including shortstop Johnny Eierman of Warsaw (Mo.) High School (3rd round, Tampa Bay), left-handed pitcher Jake Cave of Hampton (Va.) Christian School (6th round, New York Yankees), left-handed pitcher Cody Glenn of Westbury High School in Houston (15th round, Toronto), right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge (22nd round, Toronto), right-handed pitcher Nick Goody of Manatee (Fla.) Community College (22nd round, New York Yankees) and outfielder Arby Fields of Cypress (Calif.) College (27th round, San Diego).

LSU junior all-America outfielder Mikie Mahtook was chosen in the first round on Monday by the Tampa Bay Rays. Also selected on Monday in Compensatory Round A by the Colorado Rockies was LSU signee Trevor Story, a shortstop from Irving (Texas) High School.
