BATON ROUGE -- LSU's football team picked up more recognition as a top 15 team heading into the 2006 season as the Tigers are ranked No. 12 in the Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook Preseason Top 25, the publication announced.

The Tigers are coming off an 11-2 mark in 2005, their first season under head coach Les Miles. LSU capped last year with a 40-3 win over then-No. 9 Miami in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. The Tigers return 13 starters and a total of 39 letterwinners from last year's team.

LSU is one of five Southeastern Conference teams in the top 25. Florida leads the way, coming in at No. 5, followed by Auburn at No. 10, Georgia at No. 19, and Tennessee at No. 24. LSU faces Florida, Auburn and Tennessee all on the road this year.

Ohio State is the preseason No. 1-ranked team in the Blue Ribbon poll, followed by Notre Dame, Texas, West Virginia and Florida. Oklahoma, Cal, Southern Cal, Miami and Auburn round out the top 10.

LSU opens its 2006 season on Sept. 2 when the Tigers host Louisiana-Lafayette in Tiger Stadium.
