SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The fourth-ranked Tigers and the sixth-ranked Lady Tigers will look to put an exclamation point on an already impressive outdoor track and field season as they wrap up the year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week.

The four-day meet begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday at Sacramento State’s Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. (Use the table at the bottom of this page to follow LSU athletes' results).

The meet will feature a record amount of television coverage as both CSTV and CBS will broadcast live from the event. CSTV will air two hours of live coverage on Friday from 7-9 p.m. (CT), while CBS will follow that with a two and a half hour broadcast on Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m. (CT).

LSU, who has qualified a total of 18 athletes and four relay teams to the national meet, should be in the hunt for spot among the top of the standings in both the men’s and women’s team races as the meet draws to a close on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers have 11 scoring opportunities throughout the week and are looking to the track for many of those.

Sophomore Xavier Carter, who is entered in the 100 and 400 meters and runs on both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams, has the ability to be the Tigers’ biggest point producer. The NCAA South Central Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year enters the meet ranked No. 1 in the country in the 400 meters and sixth in the 100 meters. In addition, both relay squads are undefeated this year and ranked No. 1 coming into the championships.

Also on the track will be senior Kelly Willie. The 16-time All-American comes into the meet having posted the field’s top time in the 200 meters. He also anchors the Tigers’ 4x100 team and runs a leg on the 4x400-meter relay squad.

However, to be in the team hunt the Tigers will have to depend on each and everyone of its members to perform to the best of their ability if they want to make a run at the national title.

“If we have a shot at winning a national title it’s not going to be just because of Xavier and Kelly,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “It’s going to take big contributions from everyone, Jeremy Hicks, Isa Phillips, Darion Powell, those type of guys. They are going to be the ones that make the difference.”

In the hunt for the team title along with the Tigers will be top-ranked Florida State, No. 2 UTEP and No. 3 Texas.

“To win, I think Florida State, UTEP or Texas will have to have a good meet and I think we will have to have a better meet,” said Shaver. “I really believe this meet comes down to scoring opportunities and Florida State has about 15 and we have 11. Those are the things that make a difference at a meet like this.”

On the women’s side, the team race looks to be between top-ranked and NCAA Indoor champion, Texas, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Miami and No. 4 Auburn. The Lady Tigers stand just behind that group with a No. 6 national ranking.

“I would be happy with a top-five finish for the women,” said Shaver. “The way I look at it we have essentially the same group of athletes that were here a year ago. Then, we scored 10 points and finished 24th overall. Here we are projected to score about 28 points and finish sixth. If we do that or a little better and look at the improvement from one year to the next you can’t be disappointed.”

The Lady Tigers will look to sophomore Kelly Baptiste to help lead the squad. Entered in both the 100 and 200 meters and running the anchor leg on the Lady Tigers’ 4x100-meter relay team, Baptiste has the ability to put up some big points towards the Lady Tigers’ team total.

Also with the opportunity to score in a couple of places is sophomore Deonna Lawrence. The Elk Grove, Calif., native comes into the meet with the field’s sixth fastest time in the 400 meters. She also anchors the Lady Tigers’ 4x400-meter relay team that is listed at No. 2 nationally.

The quest for the team titles will begin to take shape tomorrow as action from the NCAA Outdoor Championships begins at noon (CT).
