BATON ROUGE -- LSU sprinter Xavier Carter was named the SEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the conference office. The league honor marks the eighth for a LSU athlete this season and the third for Carter who was previously recognized during the weeks of Jan. 26 and Feb. 15.
Carter turned in an exceptional day on the track at last week's Miami Elite Invitational, winning the 200 meters and running the second leg on the Tigers' 4x100 meter relay that also claimed the meet title.
Running in just his first 200-meter race of the outdoor season, Carter blew by the competition, crossing the finish line in blazing 20.13 speed. The time, the fastest in the world in the event this season, was just .11 second off his school record mark of 20.02 set at last year's NCAA Regional Championships.
In addition, Carter helped the Tigers remain undefeated in the 4x100 relay this year as he joined with Richard Thompson, Marvin Stevenson and Kelly Willie to win the Tigers' fourth-straight short relay title with a NCAA-leading time of 38.89.
The Tigers return to the track this weekend as they close out their home schedule Saturday with the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
