BATON ROUGE -- LSU sprint sensation Xavier Carter received further recognition for his stellar indoor track and field season as Sports Illustrated has listed him among its, "Faces in the Crowd," in its April 3 issue that appears on newsstands now.
Carter, a native of Palm Bay, Fla., was named the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He won the 400 meters, anchored the Tigers' victorious 4x400-meter relay team and finished second in the 200 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
In addition, he finished the indoor season undefeated in the 400 meters, winning seven straight races while running a school record and personal best time of 45.28 in the finals of the national championships. Carter's school record was just one of three on the year as he also clocked a LSU-best 20.30 seconds in the 200 meters and helped the 4x400-meter team to a school record mark of 3:04.01, a time that was just one-half second off collegiate record pace.
