Four Divers Qualify For NCAA Championships At Zones

AUSTIN, Texas– Four LSU divers qualified for the NCAA Championships on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Zone D Regionals on their respective springboard events.  

“I couldn’t be happier with day one,” said LSU head diving coach Doug Shaffer. “We really met the expectations of what I felt was possible on Day One with four Tigers qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Matt McClellan is in his senior year so this is really special for him. As well as for Aimee Wilson who is a freshman and is competing in her first regional. We have two more days to go and we are focused on continuing our success.”

Juan Celaya-Hernandez and Matt McClellan both qualified for the NCAA Championships on the one-meter springboard on the men’s side. Celaya-Hernandez took the top spot with a score of 803.10, which was 27.70 points higher than the closest competitor. McClellan finished in sixth place with a score of 709.70.

For the women, both Lizzie Cui and Aimee Wilson qualified for the NCAA Championships on the three-meter board. Cui finished in seventh place with a score of 681.40 and Wilson finished 12thto claim the last qualifying spot with a score of 659.70.

Also for the men, Matthew Phillip placed 15thand Dakota Hurbis finished 25thwith scores of 290.55 and 258.00, respectively.
