Gymnastics Opens with Win Over No. 8 Cal

BATON ROUGE - In front of an opening night record crowd of 10,788 Tiger fans, the fourth-ranked LSU gymnastics team got the 2019 season off to a roaring start by defeating eighth-ranked California by a score of 196.775 to 195.650, Friday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
LSU gymnasts Lexie Priessman, Sarah Finnegan and Ruby Harrold swept all four events and the all-around. Finnegan took home the all-around title with a 39.675 and cracked LSU’s top-10 career titles list and pushed her total to 49.
Priessman Claims the Vault Title
Priessman led the way for the Tigers on the vault with a score of 9.90. Senior Julianna Cannamela opened the meet off for LSU with a 9.85. Finnegan and Edney earned scores of 9.875 and 9.85 respectively on the event.
LSU Responds on Bars
Bouncing back after a tough fall on the vault, junior Ruby Harrold led the Tigers with a score of 9.925 to earn her second career win on the event. Sophomore Sami Durante continued as the first performer on bars and earned a 9.85. Edney and Finnegan scored 9.90’s in the fourth and sixth spots respectively.
Finnegan Anchors Beam
Christian Desiderio opened beam with a 9.825. Bridget Dean and Durante made their debut on beam and earned scores of 9.775 and 9.85 respectively. Edney posted a 9.825 and Reagan Campbell followed with a 9.875. Finnegan anchored beam with a 9.95 for her 17th career title on the vent.
Tigers End with 49.275 on Floor
Harrold led off on floor by posting a 9.85. After a 9.25 in the second spot, Sarah Edwards righted the event with a 9.85. McKenna Kelley made her return to the floor for the first time since tearing her Achilles and posted a 9.90. Finnegan scored a 9.95 in the fifth spot to take home her third title of the night.
The Tigers hit the road for the first time in the 2019 season as they take on Auburn at the Auburn Arena. The Tigers will face off at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, January 11.
