Monroe Rebounds at ITA All-American Consolation Singles
Communications Graduate Assistant
TULSA, Okla. – After falling in the opening round of the men’s singles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, senior Shane Monroe rebounded to advance in the consolation singles draw Friday morning.
“Thursday, Shane played on of the best guys here and didn’t play his best but was still able to make it interesting,” co-head coach Chris Brandi explained. Today, Shane played a fantastic match, probably his best match since late last season. Shane was up early, then his opponent took it up a level and played impressive defense in the second set. Shane responded by taking it up a level in the tiebreaker. He will need to sustain that focus tomorrow to keep it going.”
Thursday morning, Monroe faced Notre Dame’s Alex Lebedev, who grabbed the first set from the Ventnor, New Jersey, native, 6-2, 7-6(1). Monroe forced a tiebreaker in the second set but was unable to push the match into a third set, falling, 7-6(1).
In the consolation round Friday morning, Monroe rebounded to put together a solid match against Virginia’s Aswin Lizen, who was seeded in the main draw. The senior easily took the first set, 6-1, but when Lizen forced a tiebreaker in the second, Monroe was able to secure the match, 7-6.
Monroe will play in the consolation round of 16 Saturday at 10 a.m. CST against Michigan’s Mattias Simar.
