MUNICH, Germany – After the FISU World University Championships began with 32 pairs from 29 countries, Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss will have the opportunity to place fifth overall after falling to Canada in the quarterfinals.

Coppola and Nuss faced twins Nicole and Megan McNamara from Canada in the quarterfinals and after a hard fought match, fell just short of advancing to the semifinals. After Coppola and Nuss took the first set 21-17, the twins took the second set, 21-18. In the deciding set, Coppola and Nuss were unable to pull out the win as they fell, 15-13, setting up a win or go home match.

In that match, Coppola and Nuss faced the Austrian pair of Nadine Strauss and Franziska Friedl. The American duo had to come from behind after dropping the first set, 21-14, but took care of business in the final two sets, 21-16 and 15-9, to advance to a match for fifth place in the tournament slated for Friday.

In the match for fifth place, Coppola and Nuss will face the Swiss duo of Fabienne Geiger and Anja Licka at 4 a.m. CT on Friday. The match will be available to be streamed live.

Like Coppola and Nuss, Geiger and Licka swept through pool play. After they won in the round of 16, the Swiss pair fell in the quarterfinals and won their elimination match to set up Friday’s dual with Coppola and Nuss.
