Baton Rouge, La. – An incoming freshman on the LSU track and field team, Mondo Duplantis racked up some high school awards over the past week and a half; on Monday (July 2), he was named the 2017-18 All-USA Boys National Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Additionally in late June, the pole vaulter was named the Gatorade Louisiana Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year (June 21) for the second year in a row.

The highlight of Duplantis’ stellar high school campaign came at the 2018 5A LHSAA State Championships in early May when he broke his own U20 world record with a clearance of 5.93 meters (19-5.50) to claim his fourth-straight state title in the event. The clearance of 5.93 meters is currently the third-best mark in the world for 2018 and the highest mark ever cleared by a high school competitor in the United States.

Duplantis currently owns four of the top 10 performances in the world in 2018. Most recently at the Diamond League meet in Paris, the Lafayette native cleared 5.90 meters (19-4.25) to take second place at the professional meet on June 30.

Earlier in the month of June, he picked up his first-career win on the Diamond League circuit with a clearance of 5.86 meters (19-2.75) to prevail over Sam Kendricks, the 2018 world leader. He also took down 2012 Olympic gold medalist and current world record holder Renaud Lavillenie on June 19 at Montreuil Elite Meet in France.

It marks the second straight year that Duplantis has garnered the All-USA Boys National Track and Field Athlete of the Year award while it is the third time for him being named the Gatorade Louisiana Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Duplantis is scheduled to next compete on July 4 in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the likes of Kendricks and Lavillenie.
