Colorado Springs, Colo.  – Throughout life fathers offer a ton of advice to their sons in many ways, especially in the sporting realm. This week current LSU men’s golfer, Carter Toms, has had the opportunity to flip the script and help his father, David Toms, out by caddying for him at the 2018 U.S. Senior Open.

After learning that his father’s longtime caddy, Scott Gneiser, was unable to caddy about an hour before David’s afternoon tee time for the opening round on Thursday, Carter was called into action and was ready to roll.

“It was very unexpected, but I’ve enjoyed it for sure,” Carter mentioned after round two on Friday. “I was eating lunch and got a call from my mom saying that Scott {Gneiser} was unable to caddy, so I stepped right in.”

A newly minted combo on the course in this aspect, Carter and David are still feeling out the player/caddy relationship on the course. One thing is for sure, it’ll be a weekend the duo never forgets.

“We are enjoying being out there and bouncing ideas off each other,” Carter mentioned. “Mainly, I’m just trying to stay out of his way and learn some stuff about what it’s like to be inside the ropes.”

After two rounds of play, the elder Toms sits in a tie for 10th place with a two-round score of 1-over par 141 (70-71) at the Broadmoor Golf Club. He is scheduled to tee off on Saturday afternoon at 2:08 p.m. CT for his third round of play. The last LSU individual to win medalist honors at the SEC Championship in 1987, David is a 13-time PGA Tour winner and is currently in his second year of play on the PGA Champions Tour.

“Hopefully we can get some putts to fall on the weekend,” Carter noted. “He’s in good position and hitting it really well. Just need to make some putts. He’s been hitting his irons great this week, putting the ball in spots that’s giving him good looks at birdies.”
