Career-Best Win Sends Tiger Duo to Quarterfinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The LSU women’s tennis team’s 29th-ranked duo of Jessica Golovin and Eden Richardson came back from a first-set deficit to pick up the highest-ranked doubles win of their careers, advancing to the NCAA Division I Women’s Doubles Championships quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Golovin and Richardson’s quarterfinal appearance marks the first time in program history that LSU has placed a doubles pairing in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships in two consecutive seasons.
Facing off against the country’s No. 5 pairing of Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles from Ole Miss, Golovin and Richardson dropped an extremely close, back-and-forth first set, 7-5.
The Tiger duo stormed back and completely dominated the Rebels in the second set, 6-1, to force a decisive third-set tiebreak to 10 points to determine the match.
Golovin and Richardson trailed 7-5 in the third before rattling off four straight points to take the 9-7 lead and eventually took the set, 10-8, to clinch a spot in the final eight.
Golovin and Richardson improved to 16-8 across all doubles competitions this season and picked up their fifth win against a ranked opponents Friday. Four of their five ranked wins have come against opponents in the top 15.
Saturday’s quarterfinal match-up will feature Arizona State’s No. 12-ranked pairing of Lauryn Jean-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh squaring off against Golovin and Richardson for a spot in the semifinal round.
