BATON ROUGE – After defeating UAB and No. 15 Arizona on Friday, the LSU beach volleyball team swept through its Saturday competition, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville and Jacksonville, both, 5-0.
The Tigers extended their win streak to nine matches and improving to 16-9 on the season. LSU has won 17-straight home matches, dating back to last season.
“I told the girls before the weekend that our expectation coming into the weekend was to win all four matches,” said coach Russell Brock.
The day started with the Court 5 pair of Lilly Kessler and Kahlee York winning in two sets, 21-11 and 21-7. Megan Davenport and Maddie Ligon shortly did the same, winning 21-8 and 21-14 against TAMUK.
On Court 3, Hunter Domanski and Olivia Powers clinched the match for LSU with set wins of 21-16 and 21-12. Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss put the Tigers on top of TAMUK, 4-0, winning in back-to-back sets, 21-10 and 21-6.
Mandi Orellana and Haleigh Nelson took Court 2, but it took them three sets, the only court that went the distance, today. After falling in the first set, 21-18, the LSU duo came back to win the next two, 21-13 and 15-12, as LSU defeated TAMUK, 5-0.
Davenport and Tatum Ballard started the Tigers off strong against Jacksonville State, winning in two sets, 21-9 and 23-21, on Court 4. Ligon and York took Court 5 in straight sets, 21-14 and 21-4.
Courts one, two and three all finished simultaneously in two sets as the Tigers took the match, 5-0, against Jacksonville State. Domanski and Powers took the first set, 21-9. The LSU duo trailed in the second set, but battled to tie it up at 20 before clinching the match with a 23-21 set two victory. On Court 2, Nelson and Orellana won in straight sets, 21-16 and 21-13.
Coppola and Nuss extended their winning streak to 13, winning 21-12 and 21-15. The duo has won all of its matches during the streak in straight sets.
The Tigers won 15 courts in straight sets this weekend as a team.
“For this time of year, the winning streak is import, but how we’re doing it is important as well,” said Brock.
