MINNEAPOLIS – In the first diving event of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, LSU sophomore Juan Celaya-Hernandez finished seventh overall in the one-meter springboard and earned First-Team All-America honors today at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“I’m proud of Juan,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “He competed very well to finish seventh in his first NCAA one-meter final. This was an incredibly strong field of divers that included three Olympians. Juan missed a little in two rounds, and they were positive mistakes, but at this level there is no room for error. Juan is not disappointed. It’s his highest finish on one-meter. This experience just makes him hungry for the two days in front of him.”
Celaya-Hernandez started off the day with a strong showing in the prelims, finishing fourth overall with a score of 389.05
In the finals, Celaya-Hernandez improved his score by a couple points, finishing with a 391.10 and coming in seventh overall.
With the seventh-place finish, the Mexico native earned his third All-America honor. In his freshman season, he earned first team honors on three-meter after taking bronze and honorable mention on one-meter after winning the consolation final and taking ninth overall.
Celaya-Hernandez’ NCAA Championships run will continue tomorrow as he moves up to the three-meter competition. Prelims will begin at 12:15 p.m. CT.
