KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU diving team completed day one of the Tennessee Diving Invite, where Juan Celaya-Hernandez remained undefeated on springboard after taking gold in the men’s three-meter.
“Our first day was good,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Although we are shaking off some holiday break cobwebs, we had some very solid performances. This is the highest level of competition we’ve faced this year.”
The men sent two divers to the three-meter finals. Celaya-Hernandez finished first in both the prelims and finals, scoring a 432.40 and 432.95, respectively. Matthew Phillip also reached the finals, where he set a new season-high score of 336.10 and finished eighth overall.
The women also sent two to the finals in the one-meter springboard. In the finals, junior Lizzie Cui finished on the podium, taking third with a score of 315.30. Junior Rileigh Knox also qualified for the finals, where she finished 11th after scoring 266.95.
Sophomore Makayla Robillard finished 25th with a score of 229.20.
“Juan’s win in the three-meter was excellent and Lizzie competed very well to place third on one-meter,” said Shaffer. “I’m extremely happy with Rileigh and Matt Phillip for making the final. They are showing excellent development and progress.”
The Tigers continue tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. CT, where the men will compete on one-meter and the women will take on the three-meter.
