BATON ROUGE – LSU freshman Trey Winstead has his sights set on a third-straight top-10 finish after closing out Monday’s second round at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in a tie for seventh place overall with a bogey-free round of 2-under 70 to break par after 36 holes at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

Winstead will tee off in the final round on Tuesday in a tie for seventh place on the leaderboard with a two-day total of 2-under par 142 after opening with an even-par round of 72 in Sunday’s first round.

No. 7-ranked LSU also sits in a tie for seventh place in the overall team standings at 6-over par for the championship as the Tigers followed their team round of 1-over par 289 on Sunday with a 5-over 293 on Monday to share seventh spot with Texas Tech at 6-over 582. They head into the final round 17 shots off Illinois’ pace as the Fighting Illini hold a two-shot lead over Florida with a two-day total of 11-under par 565.

Only three teams in the field of 17 have broken par through 36 holes at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational as California follows in third place at 2-under par 574 for the event. Vanderbilt currently sits in fourth at 2-over 578 ahead of Auburn in fifth place at 3-over 579 and North Florida in sixth place at 5-over 581 through Monday’s play.

Junior All-American Luis Gagne and sophomore Philip Barbaree counted two 2-over 74s toward LSU’s team score on the day with junior Nathan Jeansonne and freshman Jacob Bergeron adding a pair of 3-over 75s.

Top 10 Tiger

Winstead took his first tee shot at Isleworth Golf & Country Club with consecutive top-10 finishes in each of his previous two tournament appearances this fall while tying for 10th place at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Sept. 24 and tying for fifth place at LSU’s own David Toms Intercollegiate finishing two weeks ago on Oct. 7.

He was steady throughout the second round Monday as he remained even-par through nine holes before picking up a shot with a birdie at the par-four 10th hole to start the back nine. Winstead reached 2-under par in his round with a second birdie at the par-five 17th hole for a team-low 2-under 70 on the afternoon.

That performance moved the Baton Rouge native 15 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place individually where he sits nine shots back of Illinois All-American Dylan Meyer at 11-under par.

Meyer followed his opening-round 5-under 67 with the low round of the tournament at 6-under 66 in the second round to claim a commanding six-stroke lead with one round to play. Florida teammates Gordon Neale and John Axelsen are Meyer’s closest challengers with matching scores of 5-under 139 to tie one another for second place through 36 holes.

The Lineup

Bergeron, who finished Sunday’s opener with a 3-under 69 to tie for fourth place on the day, followed with a second-round 3-over 75 to remain in the Top 20 of the leaderboard in a tie for 20th place at even-par 144 for 36 holes. Gagne trailed in a tie for 34th place at 3-over 147, while Barbaree ended the day in a tie for 47th place at 5-over 149 and Jeansonne tied for 71st place at 9-over 153 ahead of Tuesday’s final round.
