AUBURN, Ala. -- Three members of the LSU women’s tennis team moved on to the singles round of 16 while both of LSU’s doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 after the opening day of the ITA Southern Regional at the Yarbrough Tennis Center Friday.

Junior Kennan Johnson and freshman Eden Richardson got the first day of competition started with an 8-0 takedown of Angela Lorenzo and Nadja Manjon from Louisiana Tech before senior Ryann Foster and freshman Elyse Lavender finished off Troy’s pairing of Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky, 8-4.

Shortly thereafter, the Tigers returned to the courts and rattled off four consecutive straight-set singles victories in the round of 64 as Foster, Richardson, Lavender and Jessica Golovin each handled their opponents with ease and advanced to the round of 32.

Johnson dropped a tough three-set match in the opening round but rebounded strongly with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the consolation round of 32, advancing to tomorrow’s competition as well.

In the singles main draw round of 32, Foster defeated Allie Sanford of Ole Miss 6-3, 7-5, while Richardson continued her strong stretch of play with a quick 6-2, 6-4 triumph over UNO’s Trang Dao.

Golovin dropped the first set in her match against Auburn’s Jaeda Daniel, but battled back to claim the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-4, joining Foster and Richardson in Saturday’s round of 16 action.

Overall, the Tigers went 10-2 across singles and doubles on opening day and will look to build upon an impressive start in Saturday’s play.

The doubles round of 16 and quarterfinals will both be played Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. CT and 9:30 a.m. CT, respectively, followed by the singles round of 16 at noon CT.
