MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. --- After advancing to the final round of qualifying at the 15K LTP/Charleston tournament, LSU women’s tennis freshmen Elyse Lavender and Eden Richardson fell in a pair of closely contested, three-set matches Tuesday.
Facing off against second-seeded Ksenia Kuznetsova, Lavender took the first set 6-3 before Kuznetsova rallied to take the next two sets from the LSU freshman.
Richardson dropped her first set against Elvina Kalieva, then rebounded to win a second-set tiebreak at 7-6(2). The third set came down to the wire, but Kalieva ultimately came out on top, taking the third set 7-5 over Richardson.
"It was a productive weekend for both freshmen getting solid match play and being pushed today," co-head coach Julia Sell said. "We learn a lot from battles like today and will come back even stronger for the next tournament."
Next up for the Tigers is the Shipyard Cup 10K at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club in Hilton Head, S.C. and the ITA All-American Qualifying competition at the Riviera Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., both beginning on Oct. 3.
