LAFAYETTE, La. – The LSU men’s tennis team started off the fall season on a high note after going 8-2 Friday to open the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic.

The LSU men’s tennis team returns to action Saturday in Lafayette with both doubles pairs advancing to the quarterfinals of the main draw and Nikola Samardzic in the quarterfinals of Flight 2 singles.

To open the day, Tiger tandem Gabor Csonka and Agie Moreno defeated Texas pair Colin Markes and John Mee in a tiebreaker 7-6(3). Samardzic and Rafael Wagner followed with a 6-4 win against Sean Burnette and Jakub Wojcik of South Florida.

“The guys did a nice job today,” co-head coach Chris Brandi said. “They competed hard from the first doubles match until the end of the day, and I am very proud of their effort. We feel like we all still have a long way to go, but it was certainly a nice start to the season.”

In Flight 1 singles, Csonka fell to Rodrigo Banzer of Texas in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(5). The senior rebounded in Flight 1 consolation and defeated Pierre Luquet with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Samardzic opened singles in the second flight with a convincing, 6-4, 6-3 win against Dominik Koenig of UL-Lafayette. The junior followed with a 7-6(1), 6-2 victory against Texas Tech’s Jackson Cobb. With two wins in Flight 2, Samardzic advanced to the quarterfinals and will face Jack MacFarlane of Georgia State Saturday at noon.

Third seed Rafael Wagner worked a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win against Quentin Coulaud of Georgia State but walked over in his second match against Colin Markes of Texas after sustaining an injury.

To open his first match of the season, Moreno fell to MacFarlane, 6-3, 6-4 and returned to defeat Pearse Dolan of UL-Lafayette with a gutsy, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(2), win.
