NEWPORT, R.I. --- Freshman Elyse Lavender capped off an undefeated weekend at the Duke James Bonk Invite, defeating No. 103 Kenya Jones to claim her flight’s singles championship while the rest of the LSU women’s tennis team concluded play at the Grass Court Invitational Sunday.

Lavender dropped the first set to Jones 6-1 before storming back against the Georgia Tech sophomore, winning the next two sets 7-6(1), 6-1. All in all, Lavender took down two ranked opponents over the weekend and owns a perfect 3-0 singles record to begin her Tiger career.

In the finals of the Grass Court Invitational, LSU’s other promising freshman Eden Richardson got off to an early 6-4 lead against No. 41 Maria Kononova of North Texas before ultimately dropping the match in a third-set tiebreak to finish second in her flight.

The Tigers will return to Baton Rouge in preparation for the ITA All-American Championships in which Ryann Foster will begin singles qualifying competition on October 3 and doubles qualifying competition with partner Kennan Johnson on the same day.

Following the ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Club in Pacific Palisades, California, the LSU women’s tennis team will travel to Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Alabama to compete in the ITA Southern Regional from October 19-23.
