Paul Mainieri on Hal Hughes:
“Hal is a baseball rat. What I mean by that is he grew up on the ball field as the son of an outstanding college coach and has been around the game his whole life. I certainly can relate to Hal's upbringing. He is a terrific defensive player that can play shortstop at the major college level. Obviously, he can play anywhere on the infield where we need his defense. He is solid fundamentally at the plate and only needs time to gain more strength to be a productive and consistent hitter.”
