OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 11 LSU softball team dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 22 Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday as a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh gave the home side a 3-2 win to earn the weekend sweep of the Tigers Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in Oxford.

After scoring their first pair of runs on the weekend and holding the lead from the jump, Ole Miss (30-13, 6-9) would not strike until the final inning and it would be all they needed as LSU (32-12, 8-7 SEC) would score its only runs of the game in the first and the third, unable to plate anything else for the rest of the afternoon.

The strike spoiled what was nearly a fourth consecutive SEC shutout and gem in the circle for sophomore pitcher Sydney Smith (9-3), who was two outs away from pulling it off until LSU allowed the inning to continue by committing its third error of the game to put two runners on before the home run gave Ole Miss the walk-off win. Smith finished the game allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 6.1 innings of work.

Amanda Doyle drove in both runs for LSU on the afternoon, going 2-for-3, as she along with Constance Quinn and Amber Serrett combined for six of LSU’s eight total hits in the contest.

Kaitlin Lee (12-6) wound up earning the win as she struck out two and walked one on 119 total pitches. Pinch hitter Alyssa Gonzales had the home run, her fourth of the season, to cap the rally for Ole Miss.

The Game Turned When…

On the second pitch of the at bat to pinch hitter Gonzales in the bottom of the seventh and one out, she lifted one to left, clearing the fence for the walk-off three-run home run to give Ole Miss a comeback, 3-2 victory over LSU to sweep the series.
