TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Senior outfielder Bailey Landry ripped an RBI single to right field in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless tie, while sophomore Sydney Smith tossed her third-straight SEC complete-game shutout in the circle in a 1-0 win for No. 8 LSU over No. 12 Alabama Saturday night in Tuscaloosa to even the series.

After dropping the opener on Friday, the Tigers (32-8, 8-3 SEC) and Crimson Tide (34-7, 9-5) produced goose eggs for over half of the contest until Landry’s RBI single to right to put the game’s first run on the board. The senior finished the game earning three of the team’s five hits, with Shemiah Sanchez and Aliyah Andrews having the two others.

Smith, the first player since Rachele Fico to pitch three consecutive shutouts in SEC play in 2012, moved to 9-1 on the season as she scattered three hits, walking three and striking out two on 105 total pitches on Saturday in the win. Smith worked out of a host of jams throughout the game, as Alabama stranded six runners on base over the course of the game.

Sydney Littlejohn (14-2) suffered the loss for Alabama, striking out six and walking two. Reagan Dykes, Gabby Callaway and Claire Jenkins had the three hits for the Crimson Tide.

The Game Turned When…

With two outs in the fifth, Andrews legged out an infield single to reach first. After stealing second and a walk to Emily Griggs, Landry smoked a one-hopper to right to score the freshman to give LSU the lead.

Top Performers

Bailey Landry: 3-4, RBI

Shemiah Sanchez: 1-3

Aliyah Andrews: 1-2, run scored, stolen base

Sydney Smith: 7.0 IP, three hits, no runs, three walks and two strikeouts

On earning the win to even the series…

“At this point in the season it doesn’t matter how you get the win as long as you get it. It was a big win on the road against a tough opponent, so we’ll take this win any way we can get it.”

On Sydney Smith’s performance and her performance of the last three weeks…

“I don’t how you can continue to quietly beat people but she does. I don’t know that she gets near the credit that she deserves for what she does for us but I can’t imagine where we’d be without her.”

On Bailey Landry’s hit and performance…

“I feel like as long as we can get Bailey Landry to the plate a few times in a game we’ve got a good opportunity. She’s really carried us all year long, and it’s another night where she continues to do that.”

The rubber match of the series on Sunday is set for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Rhoades Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
