Duke Big Leader at LSU Tiger Golf Classic

BATON ROUGE – The Duke Blue Devils posted back-to-back under par rounds on a wind-swept day at the University Club and the defending champions of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic opened a 13-stroke lead after 36 holes of play.

The tournament, with the weather forecast of rain on Saturday, will take the day off and resume at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with the final round. Admission at the U-Club in free.

Duke had rounds of 3-under 285 and 2-under 286 to finish the 36 holes at 5-under 571, with Oklahoma State (sixth after the first round) and Arkansas tied for second at +8 584. North Carolina State is in the battle for a top finish in fourth at 12-over par 588 (290-298).

SMU and Denver are tied for fifth at 19-over 595 with defending NCAA champion, Washington, in seventh at 23-over 599.

LSU played much better in the afternoon round and had scores of 306 and 299 and stands in 12th at 29-over 605.

Leona Maguire of Duke posted rounds of 67 and 68 to lead the tournament at 9-under par 135, five shots ahead of Virginia Elena Carta of Duke (73-67) and Julianne Alvarez of Washington (70-70) at 4-under par 140. Also under par after 36 holes are Cara Gorli of Arkansas at 2-under 142 (72-70) and Sarah Bae of NC State at -1 143 (69-74).

With the course set up to allow for the wind during the long 10 hours of almost continuous play, there were 13 eagles by 13 different players during the course of play, including two hole-in-ones. Ariadna Fonseca of Kansas early in the first round aced the par 3, 159-yard 13th hole and then Lyberty Anderson of UNCW posted an ace on the 153 8th hole.

LSU’s top player is junior Sydney Cavin of Baton Rouge who had back to back rounds of 2-over 74 to stand at T18 at +4 148. Cavin had eight birdies on the day, tied for fifth among the field of 90.

Also with eight birdies was Mississippi sophomore Kathleen Gallagher who posted a 1-over 73 in the afternoon session and moved up 28 spots in the standings from the morning round. Senior Caroline Nistrup, who had seven birdies on the day, posted the best LSU round of the first 36 holes with a 1-unver par 71 in the afternoon 18. She moved up 33 spots from the first 18 holes and is T50 at 10-over 154.

Other LSU highlights had Claudia De Antonio shooting 74 in the opening round and individual competitor freshman Monica Dibildox posting a 73 in the afternoon round to move 22 spots in the standings.

In other tournament stats from the first day, Nistrup played the par 3s in 1-under par, one off the tournament best, while Gallagher played the par 5s in 3-under par. Cavin was the best LSU player on the par 4s at 3-over par.

The field of 90 played consistent golf as a group, averaging 76.66 in the morning session and 76.86 in the afternoon.
