BATON ROUGE --- Freshman Jade Lewis clinched her second SEC match in a row for the LSU women’s tennis team, winning in straight sets on court two and earning one of the most historic wins in program history over No. 5 Auburn Sunday at the LSU Tennis Complex.

Sunday marked the third top-ten win under the Sells, and the highest-ever ranked win for the women’s tennis program.

“I really have to credit the girls on this one,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “We had a really rough start to the season, but the whole time this team has had amazing energy and they’ve believed in themselves. They compete hard, they work hard and we’ve gotten better with each match, and that’s what allowed us to come out and beat the fifth-best team in the country.”

The No. 27 Tigers improved to 11-4 (4-2 SEC) with the win while Auburn fell to 18-4 (2-3 SEC).

LSU got off to a tremendous start in doubles as Becca Weissmann and Lewis dominated the No. 67 pairing of Andie Dikosavljevic and Alannah Griffin from start to finish, winning court two 6-1.

The No. 42 duo of Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster overcame an Auburn lead on court one and clinched the doubles point for the Tigers, defeating the No. 8 pairing of Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo to give LSU an early 1-0 lead.

The win over Michaud/Russo represented the highest-ranked doubles victory of the season for Valle Costa and Foster, and the highest doubles victory of Foster’s career. The win was the second-highest doubles victory of Valle Costa’s career since she and Noel Scott took down Auburn’s No. 6 pairing of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger in 2015.

“We started slow in doubles against Alabama, so today we changed up the way we coached them,” Sell said. “We gave them a few more specific things to do and I thought that helped tremendously.”

Auburn leveled the score at 1-1 to kick things off in singles competition as Roos van der Zwaan defeated Abby Owens 6-4, 6-3 on court six.

Jessica Golovin momentarily put LSU back in the lead with a huge 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alannah Griffin on court four before Auburn tied it up again with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five over Weissmann.

With the scored tied at two apiece and courts one, two and three locked in heated competition, Valle Costa was the first of the remaining three LSU players to finish her match. Valle Costa dominated her first set 6-1 before dropping the second set, then proceeded to storm back with a 6-2 third set to take down No. 71 Dikosavljevic on court two.

With the overall score sitting at 3-2 in favor of LSU, Lewis clinched the match for the Tigers with a gritty 7-6(3), 6-4 win over No. 29 Michaud on court one to finalize one of the all-time best team tennis performances in school history.

“That was great tennis,” Sell said. “She and Joana were both playing at a really high level today. They played really smart and really patient which is something we’ve been practicing all season.”

Singles play concluded with Auburn claiming a tight three-set match on court three to give the visitors an extra point, but the match had already been decided and LSU ended the day with an incredible 4-3 victory.

The Tigers return to action Saturday, March 25 against No. 22 Texas A&M at the LSU Tennis Complex.
