BATON ROUGE --- Freshman Jade Lewis clinched the fourth and final point in three sets as the LSU women’s tennis team defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide by a score of 4-3 at the LSU Tennis Complex Friday.

Friday marked LSU’s 30th win over Alabama in program history, its most against any SEC school.

The No. 27 Tigers improved to 10-4 (3-2 SEC) with the win while the No. 44 Crimson Tide fell to 6-9 (0-5 SEC).

“Every win we get in the SEC is huge,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “They’ve got to know that we’re going to have a ton of tough matches and they’re going to have to battle and stay focused.”

In doubles, the No. 42 pairing of Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster made quick work of No. 25 Erin Routliffe and Madde Pothoff, winning court one 6-2.

Alabama would take the final two doubles matches, however, and ultimately clinch the doubles point as Daniell/Savva defeated Jade Lewis and Becca Weissmann on court two, 6-4, and Spielmann/Valero defeated Jessica Golovin and Skylar Holloway 7-5 on court three.

“We had a couple leads in doubles that we let slip away,” Sell said. “Our intensity dropped off, but we were able to come back from that in singles and do a much better job of controlling our leads.”

In singles, Golovin was first off the court for the second match in a row with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Pothoff on court four, leveling the overall score at one apiece.

Alabama regained possession of a one-point lead as No. 124 Andie Daniell defeated No. 116 Joana Valle Costa 6-1, 6-4 on court two.

Alabama’s lead was briefly extended to 3-1 as Juliana Valero defeated Holloway on court six, 6-4, 7-5, before Foster pulled the Tigers back to within one with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court three against Danielle Spielmann.

Weissmann tied the match at three points apiece as the freshman delivered yet another clutch performance for the Tigers on court five, taking down Joanna Savva 7-5, 6-1.

With all eyes on court one to decide the match, Lewis came up huge for LSU. After splitting the first two sets 6-1, 3-6, Lewis ended any chances of an Alabama victory with a dominating 6-3 win in the third set over No. 59 Erin Routliffe to clinch the Tigers’ third SEC win of the season.

“I was hoping Jade would play that last point really aggressively,” Sell said. “She really stepped it up and went for it, which is exactly what we needed.”

The Tigers will return to action against the No. 5 Auburn Tigers at the LSU Tennis Complex on Sunday at 11 a.m.
