MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – The No. 10 ranked LSU beach volleyball team (1-4) dropped both of its matches to No. 4 UCLA and No. 1 USC on the opening day of the East vs. West tournament in Manhattan Beach, California at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The team looks to rebound tomorrow morning, squaring off in a big matchup against No. 6 Long Beach State, wrapping up the weekend against Cal Poly.
“The team played really well today. Although we didn’t win, we played some of the best volleyball we have played all year,” said head coach Russell Brock.
Freshman duo Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss tied the match at one apiece, logging their third straight win of the season at the two in straights by scores of 21-17, 21-16. The Lady Tigers rallied back, grabbing the 2-1 lead, as Megan Davenport and Cati Leak notched a victory on court five in a tightly-contested straight set match 21-19, 23-21.
LSU rearranged its lineup in the second match against the No. 1 team in the country, moving pairs to different courts and adjusting two pairings.
Coppola and Nuss moved up to court one, falling in two sets by a score of 10-21 and 13-21. USC took the 2-0 early lead, as Lindelow and Powers were defeated in straights 14-21, 12-21 at the three.
The Lady Trojans garnered their third point of the match on after Allmer and Allen also lost in a two-setter, 14-21 and 13-21 on court two.
At the four, Leak and Ligon lost their first match as a pair this season, 19-21 and14-21 as USC took a 4-0 lead. The Lady Tigers got on the board with help from their fifth pairing. Davenport and Callan Molle compiled an impressive three set win by a score of 24-22, 17-21, 15-12.
Davenport wrapped up the day as the only player to go undefeated on the day. A sophomore native of Metairie, Louisiana, Davenport is undefeated this year and has won 15 of her last 16 matches dating back to last year.
“We made a strong statement about who LSU beach volleyball is, and we definitely took a step forward in our development. We can’t wait to get back in the sand tomorrow,” added Brock.
