Men's Golf Third in Myrtle Beach After Two Rounds

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior All-American Brandon Pierce opened his spring season Saturday by firing rounds of 2-under 70 and even-par 72 to lead the No. 5-ranked LSU Tigers into third place on the opening day of the 16th-annual General Hackler Championship being held this weekend at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

Pierce was the only Tiger to break par during Saturday’s action as he finished the day seven shots off the pace in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 2-under par 142.

The Tigers, who opened their spring season with a victory at The Prestige at PGA West before earning a third-place finish at the Louisiana Classics their last time out, posted a team score of 3-under par 573 to take third place in the field of 15 teams through two rounds. LSU followed a 2-under par 286 in the morning round with a 1-under par 287 in the afternoon to sit at 3-under par for the day.

Wake Forest grabbed the 36-hole lead with a two-round total of 15-under par 561 to finish the afternoon 10 shots clear of Kent State in second place at 5-under par 571. South Carolina followed in fourth place at 8-over 584, while Virginia Tech rounded out the Top 5 of the team standings in fifth place at 10-over 586.

Pierce has his sights set on a fourth top-10 finish in what is his sixth tournament start of the season after picking up three Top 10s during the 2016 fall season. Saturday marked his first action of the spring campaign.

Also cracking the Top 10 of the individual leaderboard on the first day of competition in Myrtle Beach were senior Eric Ricard and sophomore Sam Burns, who tied one another for ninth place overall with equal totals of even-par 144. Burns leveled a 2-over 74 in the first round with a team-leading 2-under 70 in the second round, while Ricard opened the tournament with scores of 1-under 71 and 1-over 73.

Freshman Philip Barbaree also finished the day on the cusp of the Top 10 of the leaderboard as he followed a 1-over 73 in the morning with an even-par 72 in the afternoon for a 36-hole score of 1-over par 145. Adding a 2-over 146 in Saturday’s opener was sophomore Luis Gagne, who finished the day in a tie for 19th place with rounds of even-par 72 and 2-over 74.

Wake Forest standout Will Zalatoris edged Kent State’s Ian Holt by one shot on the day as Zalatoris fired a 36-hole score of 9-under par 135 to take the individual lead. Wake Forest’s Paul McBride wrapped up play third on the leaderboard with his score of 7-under par 137.

The Tigers are paired with Wake Forest and Kent State in Sunday’s final round at the 16th-annual General Hackler Championship as they will tee off from holes Nos. 1-3 with the shotgun start set for 10 a.m. CT.
